Solomon Islands is a member of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), a tripartite organisation made up of trade unions, governments and companies. The ILO is part of the United Nations system. Since 1919, the ILO has maintained and developed a system of international standards.

These standards aim to promote opportunities for women and men to obtain decent and productive work in conditions that promote or are conducive to freedom, equity, security and dignity. Solomon Islands’ compliance with ILO Standards is a concern of the International Labour Standards and Prosecution (ILSP) Unit of the Labour Division. The ILSP Unit is also responsible for the prosecution of those who breach Solomon Islands labour laws, focusing mainly on cases of unfair dismissals and the non-provision of redundancy entitlements to employees.

For more information about the ILSP Division please visit the  Solomon Islands Labour Division website.

What are the core ILO labour standards?

There are 5 core labour standards that are laid out in eight conventions.

  1. Freedom of associations and the right to collective bargaining.
  2. The elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labour.
  3. The effective abolition of child labour.
  4. The elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.
  5. The declaration on the fundamental rights and principles at work.

These standards come in several forms:

  1. Fundamental Conventions
  2. Ratified Conventions
  3. Recommendations

What are Fundamental Conventions?

The ILO’s Fundamental Conventions are 8 Conventions that lay out the ILO’s 5 core standards.

For more information on these Conventions please visit the  Solomon Islands Labour Division website.

What are the Ratified Conventions?

Ratified Conventions are the ILO Conventions that have been ratified by the Solomon Islands. They include the ILO’s Fundamental Conventions, Governance Conventions and Technical Conventions.

For more information on the number of ILO Conventions ratified by Solomon Islands please visit the  International Labour Organistation website.

What are Recommendations?

Recommendations, unlike legally binding ILO Conventions, are non-binding guidelines of international labour standards. Recommendations often supplement the basic principles of conventions by providing more detailed guidelines of how they can be applied.
